Who would have thought that just five kilometres (three miles) above Regent's Park, through exclusive St. John's Wood and Swiss Cottage, are the unspoilt villages of Hampstead and Highgate? |
|
| Hampstead has the deepest underground station in London and its mineral water springs were fashionable in the 18th & 19th centuries, when Constable, Keats and Coleridge were all local residents. A flagpole marks the 134 metre (440 ft.) summit of the hill with a view said to encompass ten counties. On the way to Highgate we can see some of the most breathtaking views over London. Kenwood House can be visited - Lord Mansfield's elegant 18th century mansion designed by Robert Adam and containing the marvellous Iveagh Collection of old master paintings. |
